Affordable Housing Stories: Gladys

My name is Gladys. I am talking to you about a program that changes and enhances lives. I am sitting in my home with Deacon Pam who has been instrumental in my recovery journey and a blessing to so many others through an organization known as City with Dwellings here in Winston-Salem. We are sitting in my home that I have been in for two years, which has been a blessing spiritually, mentally and emotionally. From the first time I arrived at City with Dwellings, it has been nothing but spiritual blessings and growth and an ability to share and grow with others. The program offers mental, medical and housing to those less fortunate.

Three years ago, I started this journey after 35 years of addiction. I experienced homelessness, mental institutions and jail multiple times, feeling like there was no way out. Having been consistently homeless over a period of four years, I had all but given up. I started praying and God led me to Winston-Salem to a program called BATTS/Insight where I received treatment and therapy. I met Lea Thullbery at City with Dwellings. The staff there, consisting of John Gladman, Rev. Pam and Adrienne, ushered me through the steps I needed to take to become a productive member of society. Today, I walk holding my head up high with confidence. I attend AA every day, I serve on the Board of Forsyth County Salvation Army, and I do outreach ministry. Because I walk in faith and hope, my path has become easy. I will walk in the path of Jesus to help others along the way.
