North Carolina Disciple

The North Carolina Disciple
is the quarterly magazine of the Diocese of North Carolina. The Disciple shares the stories of ministry in action. The magazine’s mission is to tell the story of the Diocese of North Carolina, its congregations and its people by highlighting the good work happening across the Diocese; sharing meditations and reflections on topics related to our shared life in Christ; and providing resources for Christian education, worship and outreach.

SUBSCRIPTIONS: ENJOY THE DIGITAL DISCIPLE

The Fall 2020 issue was the debut of the new digital Disciple. Designed specifically for mobile and online devices, the digital Disciple is available to all at no cost and is available on the Apple App Store, Google Play and Kindle. Simply search for “North Carolina Disciple,” and you will find the familiar diocesan shield.

Once you’ve downloaded the app, if you login and set up an account (just your name, email and password), we’ll be able to notify you when new issues become available.

A web browser-based app is also available for those who prefer to read content on a larger screen, but issues are not optimized for this format.

SUBSCRIPTIONS: KEEP THE PRINT COMING

We will continue to send a limited number of copies of each issue to every diocesan church at no cost. How your church makes those copies available is up to church leaders, and we encourage you to be in touch with them to learn more.

Want a print copy delivered directly to your home? That option remains available via a new subscription option*. The cost is only $10 for a full year, and the cost will decrease as each issue publishes throughout the year so all subscriptions will renew in December.

Want to give a gift subscription? You can do that, too! Visit the same subscription link and enter the name of the person to whom you want the Disciple sent. (Please know that if you are purchasing multiple subscriptions, each transaction will take less than a minute to complete, but they will process separately.)

*We are in the process of updating the ability to subscribe to print. If you are interested in subscribing via print, please contact [email protected].

MISSION STRATEGY ISSUE: PRIORITY STORIES

In March 2022, in conjunction with the launch of the mission strategy during the Special Convention, the Disciple published a special issue, "Priority Stories: The Mission Strategy Issue," to introduce the work already happening around the Diocese in the areas of racial reckoning, justice & healing; congregational vitality; formation; collaborations & partnerships; and creation care. Filled with inspirational stories from churches large and small, the issue is a must-read for anyone engaged in the work of the mission strategy.

STORY SUBMISSIONS

Please submit story ideas for consideration to the communications department. All story ideas will be considered for the Disciple and other storytelling channels. Story submission does not guarantee publication by the Diocese, and please keep in mind the editorial calendar is set approximately six months in advance of publication.

PHOTO SUBMISSIONS

We encourage congregations to share photos of parish life by submitting pictures for consideration for the “Around the Diocese” section of the Disciple. Photo submissions need to be at 300dpi at a size suitable for print (e.g. a 1 in-by-1 in photo at 300 dpi is probably too small to be visually interesting in print even though it is at the correct resolution). As a general rule, a photo taken with a smartphone camera should be of high enough quality for our publications. When taking and selecting photos for submission, please be mindful that action shots are more interesting for readers than posed group shots are. Any photo including children must have permission from the child’s parent or guardian.

REPRINT PERMISSION

We are happy to share the content of the Disciple; links to individual articles can be found in our News & Blogs section. To request reprint permission, please contact [email protected]; be sure to include where you like to use it, contact information and any appropriate links to where it will appear.

Christine McTaggart

Communications Director
919-600-5314 |

While Christine has enjoyed the chance to work in several interesting industries throughout her career, the common thread for her has always been marketing and communications. She enjoys seeing how communications can bring people together to share ideas, news, conversations, thoughts, discoveries and more. In her work with the diocesan communications department, she’s working to create those connection channels for all 120 worshipping communities through strategic planning, integrated communication and new opportunities to bring everyone together as a diocese.

When she’s not working, Christine enjoys spending time with family and friends, cheering on her favorite (usually underdog) sports teams, reading, doing just about anything outdoors and, above all, enjoying time with her dog, Bentley.

Summerlee Walter

Communications Coordinator
919-600-5312 |

Summerlee joined the diocesan staff in August 2011 as a youth ministry coach and assistant to the communications coordinator before assuming the communications coordinator position in 2013. Prior to her time at Diocesan House, she attended Davidson College, graduating with a BA in English, and served three years as a high school English teacher in Northampton County high schools as a member of Teach for America. Summerlee was born in Toledo, Ohio, and raised in Cleveland, and she will gladly explain to anyone who will listen why her home state is an awesome place.

When she's not working, Summerlee enjoys reading; snuggling with her dogs, Cali and Shady, and her still-sorta-feral cat, Perspehone; playing involved board games; and caring way too much about her recreational softball league.
