Meet St. James, Mooresville
By St. James, Mooresville
As Bishop Sam Rodman and Bishop Anne Hodges-Copple make their weekly Sunday visitations, we invite you to join them in meeting the churches that make our Diocese special.
St. James is known around the area as the small church with a big heart. The church was founded by the Mills Family in their home in the late 1790s or early 1800s where our cemetery stands today. The current church building was built in 1856 with the help of neighboring counties and their funding. The building was bricked in 1955 (or 1956) to preserve the building as it stands now. Our parish hall, called Shinn Hall, was built in 1997. The surrounding community has shared many fundraisers in the hall with St. James members.
The church has a partnership with our local elementary school where we do an annual school supply drive and have dinners where the school shares the proceeds to fund needs of the school. The church has several volunteers who assist at the school to help children who need tutoring with reading and other things.
Another mission is the Mooresville Soup Kitchen where veterans, homeless, elderly and low-income people in the community are fed. They also deliver to those who can’t get to either of the soup kitchen’s two locations for lunch. A food pantry for those in need was recently added. Members at St. James donate various foods and products to the soup kitchen.
We support Fifth Street Ministries and HoME, which are homeless shelters in the community. Our donations help fund programs to help people get back on their feet by learning new trades and updating what they already know to help them get back into society again with their own homes and jobs.
Just last year we started to support CAIAC program, advocates for children not old enough to talk for themselves in court. This organization helps with school supplies, clothes, shoes and beds when a child is placed with a relative rather than being put in the foster care system.
We’ve always supported Thompson’s Family Focus group with different needs. Church members have helped donate bicycles and helmets several years in a row at Christmas. There is also financial support throughout the year through our Piggy Bank Fund for the home.
St. James reaches out through the community to help others. In 2016, the church gave Christmas to two families in the community who otherwise would not have had anything for Christmas.
The church will continue to reach out in the community to help others in need. The church has grown in size over the past few years as well. Some have moved memberships to St. James and others are just part of the congregation every Sunday and help support the church in the things we do in the community.
All are welcome each Sunday morning with services starting at 10:00 a.m. each week. Come visit us one Sunday and enjoy the fellowship.
