The first freedom ride was in 1947 when 16 young people, 8 black and 8 white rode on a greyhound bus through the states of Virginia, Kentucky and North Carolina. They did so to test the enforcement of a recent supreme court ruling on segregation in interstate transportation. In 1961 the Freedom rides began in earnest at great risk to the riders, testing further rulings of the court. Next year 48 young people will have an opportunity to re-engage this history and the work of Jesus now for justice and reconciliation.
