CPC, for Church Periodical Club, was founded by women of the church more than a century ago as the “Ministry of the Word.” In a recent letter announcing May 2 as Church Periodical Club Sunday, Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, explained that the CPC now “provides grants to individuals, congregations, and other groups in this Church to assist them in purchasing written and musical resources they could not otherwise afford. They serve new congregations, seminarians in other parts of the Anglican Communion, and ministries in this Church which use English, Spanish, French, and other languages.”
CPC donations in the Diocese of NC are also used to make grants for textbooks for seminarians sponsored by the diocese as well as gifts of children’s literature to smaller churches and church-affiliated institutions such as Thompson Child & Family Focus.
Though the first Sunday in May has been set aside nationally to bring CPC to the attention of all Episcopalians, another Sunday may be chosen if it is more convenient for a parish.
